At the past two meetings, I’ve mentioned the idea of creating a committee to assist town efforts regarding establishing and implementing “green” or “sustainable” practices. The committee could build upon current initiatives, such as bringing wind and/or solar power to schools and municipal buildings as well as a town wide energy audit, while also addressing other town wide priorities (e.g. realizing cost savings, business growth). The following is a brief outline of some of the key issues such a committee could address, along with a potential makeup of such a committee.
PURPOSE
To assist the Town in developing cost effective, sustainable
practices that will aid town government, existing and future businesses and
residents.
The Committee would focus on assisting three stakeholder
groups:
Energy efficiency
Renewable energies
Water conservation
Waste reduction
LEED certification
Best Management Practices
Grant opportunities
Public / Private collaboration
COMMITTEE
ORGANIZATION
9 residents who have either an interest in helping the Town with our sustainability efforts or have a professional or educational background in a related field.
Town Boards / Committees / Departments that may have an interest in appointing a liaison include:
Conservation Commission
Facilities Board
Planning Board
Board of Selectmen
Board of Public Works
School Committee
Economic Development Commission
